In 1983, Hiroshi Ueda, a Japanese photographer, "invented" the selfie stick.
He had faced some difficulties
in getting pictures of himself and his wife taken while on vacation. So he thought up a design that would enable him place a camera on an extender stick and take pictures of himself. He took out a patent for that design.
And made not a single kobo from it.
His patent ran out in 2003. Twenty years later.

In 2005, Wayne Fromm, Canadian toy inventor, "invented" the selfie stick.
He had faced difficulties of taking pictures of himself and his daughter while on vacation. So he invented the Quick Pod. He took out a patent for that design.
The selfie stick was born a second time.
And he sold millions.

Basically the same concept. Roughly the same design.
One didn't sell a single piece. The other is so ubiquitous in today's world that is still keeps selling in the millions.
What was the difference?
Hiroshi answers that question. "My idea came too early, but that's just one of those things. I patented about 300 ideas, so that was just one of them. We call it a 3AM INVENTION- IT ARRIVED TOO EARLY."
